Turkish lawyer dies after 238 days Hunger Strike !!!

A lawyer from Turkey has died in an Istanbul hospital after being on hunger strike for 238 days. She was on the hunger strike demanding a fair trial after she was charged for allegedly having membership of a terrorist organisation.

 

Ebru Timtik, On Thursday, at the time of her death was just 30 kilograms as said by her friends. This has now sparked condemnation's from the opposition parties as well as from other countries in Turkey.

 

On Friday, when 100's of her friends and supporter's were trying to gain access to her body that was at a Istanbul forensic lab, Police forcefully used teargas and dispersed the people and pushed them away with shields as her body drove away in a van. Also, 4 people have been detained.

 

This has highlighted serious shortcomings in the justice system of Turkey, as said by the European Union. Timtik's death painfully illustrates the urgency in Turkey for the addressing of the situation of human rights in the country.

 

She was a member of Contemporary Lawyer's Association, the association accused of having ties with a outlawed Revolutionary People's Liberation Party front, DHKP-C.

 

The responsibility for numerous attacks in Turkey, including a suicide bombing at the Ankara based US Embassy in 2013 has been claimed by the DHKP-C. The suicide bomber had also killed a Turkish Security guard.

 

The Istanbul court had announced multiple sentences to 18 lawyers in 2019, including Timtik for allegedly forming and running a terror group. Timtik after being detained in 2018 was sentenced for 13 years and 6 months after which she had been in a hunger strike with some other lawyer's in February.

 

Timtik, along with another lawyer, Aytac Unsal, turned her hunger strike into a death fast. They had been consuming only liquids and vitamins after which their condition was not suitable for prison stay and were moved from the prison to a hospital in July.

 

More than 300 people arrived in the funeral ceremony. The Police had sealed off the area and several water cannon trucks had been deployed with helicopter's flying overhead.
